Titus Nemeth – Harmonised type design revisited

It was in 1993 when Charles Bigelow and Kris Holmes published «The Desing of a Unicode Font« where they explained their concept of »harmonisation«.

This concept goes together with a certain simplification of non-latin typefaces. Titus Nemeth who is internationally well known for his commercial and cultural work as well as for academic research and teaching undertakes a critical examination of the harmonisation.

Despite that »harmonisation makes the typographers life easier« harmonisation could be questioned as a practice which is »blurring the differences between the letters«. A point of view, which makes harmonised type design a good example of what Nemeth critically calls a latinisation of typefaces. Rather vivid discussion with the audience!
